The 202ª Batteria Chiappa consists in a series of military buildings, now partially reconditioned, dating back to World War II. The defensive line was built on the western slope of the Promontory of Portofino, and was designed to protect the Eastern side of the Gulf of Genovafrom the naval attacks.

Nowadays the military facility consists of 2 bunkers, 2 telemeter bunkers, a cannon platform, machine gun posts, sentinel posts, the barracks and a Visitor Centre with multimedia devices that lead the visitor on his exploration of the fortifications, as well inside the Centre, the bunkers and the armory, as outside along the trails that connect the different buildings, to foster the interaction with nature and history.

How to reach the Batterie from San Fruttuoso

Total hiking time: 4 to 7 hours, depending on the itinerary

Experienced hikers

Leaving the lodge, take the trail to Camogli, on the right side, marked with two red dots.

In one hour and a half, with a cumulative elevation gain of 470 m (and a total height difference 850 m), you will reach the military installations dating back to World War II. Particular attention has to be paid where the trail has a heavy exposure. Along the itinerary there are some dead spots for mobile phone service.

Hikers in good physical condition

Leaving the lodge, bare right to the Abbey and take the trail marked with a red circle that, in one hour, leads you up to Pietre Strette (elevation gain 450 m). From Pietre Strette continue along the trail on the left, marked with a red triangle, towards Toca (elevation gain 70 m, total height difference 150 m, hiking time 30 min.). From Toca descend to Fornelli, in half an hour, losing 250 m in height.

In less than half an hour on a slight slope (total height difference 110 m) you will reach the Visitor Centre of the Park.


Take the ferryboat to Camogli and get off in Porto Pidocchio (intermediate stop). Follow the trail that leads up to the Visitor Centre in a bit more than half an hour (elevation gain 250 m).
