The Cristo degli Abissi is a bronze statue sculptured by Guido Galletti in of 1954 and restored in 2003. The statue is based on an idea of Italian diver Duilio Marcante, in memory of his friend and fellow diver Dario Gonzatti, who dramatically died in 1947, and of all those who died at sea or devoted their life to the sea.

The original statue is placed at 15 m depth in the bay of San Fruttuoso, included in the Marine Protected Area of Portofino, and is a popular scuba diving attraction. You can find a list of the diving centres that organize visits to the Cristo degli Abissi on

It is possible to admire the statue even from the surface, without need to plunge into the water, looking underwater through a bathyscope on a “gita al Cristo” (boat ride to the Christ), organized by the local boatman.

A copy of the Cristo degli Abissi is displayed in the lateral chapel of the Abbey San Fruttuoso in order to allow everybody to admire the statue, even with bad sea conditions.
